Cowboy Junkies, SUSTO, Aaron Lee Tasjan AND MORE.

We’ve been having so much fun talking music with you that we decided to keep the dialog going with a couple of members of our Avenue team. Here’s what we’re listening to now. Maybe you’ll recognize a song and gain new insight, or be inspired to explore something new!

What are you listening to currently? Is there a song or artist you can’t get off your playlist? Tell us about it in an email along with a couple of sentences about why. We’d love to hear from you!

Rob Moore
The Avenue's President and Program Director

“I've been listening to the Trinity Sessions from the Cowboy Junkies, their remarkable debut, recorded in a church in Canada. It is both powerful and understated...can be foreground or background, so a lot of utility”.

Here’s a link to a 5-minute sampler of several songs from Trinity Sessions Revisited including guest appearances by Ryan Adams, Natalie Merchant and others.

Kurt Kempen
Festival Coordinator/Talent with Mile of Music and Host of Soul of the Mile

“Honestly, I have been still pretty much playing a lot of SUSTO, and some new Desert Noises!” Kurt booked both bands for appearances in the Appleton/Green Bay area recently.

“But, one song that has been sticking with me for a while now is “Worry” by Jack Garratt. This is one guy making all this noise! I am a firm believer in not worrying about things....98% of the things people worry about never happen. Of course, that statistic is made up, but in all seriousness I think too many people waste too much time worrying.”

Wanna hear this song by Jack Garratt? No worries, here’s a link! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFP3qh1x1Zo

Ann Koenig
Community Relations Director at The Avenue

“I was introduced to the music of Aaron Lee Tasjan at Mile of Music and have been smitten with him ever since. When I first heard his 2016 album, Silver Tears, all I could think was, “instant classic.” That voice, that guitar…but I especially love his storytelling style of lyrics.”

“Lately, “Memphis Rain” has my attention. His voice is so haunting, almost a Roy Orbison quality. And the lyrics…. ‘Her soaking leather jacket, was heavy as the pain. Beautiful!’”

Here’s a cool video where Aaron talks about the story behind writing the song and a sweet live version.

Manchester Orchestra,Valerie June, Dylan AND MORE

From the hundreds of comments we received during our Save Our Station campaign one consistent theme arose - it’s all about the music! Avenue listeners love music, from several genres and across many decades. You want a wide variety and you love to discover new music. And you love to talk about and share music, and so do we!

We’ve asked our team at The Avenue and musicians, “What’s on your turntable now? What song or artist are you obsessed with, can’t get enough of?  Is there a song stuck in your brain currently? and why?”

We start the dialogue with Rob Moore, The Avenue's President and Program Director and Sara Vos of Dead Horses:

Rob Moore
The new release from Manchester Orchestra, "Black Mile to the Surface,” is one that I think will hold up over time. If you are fan of Fleet Foxes, Mumford, and/or Tall Heights, you will be happy with this one. Take a listen to it here: https://youtu.be/KjU04sVJUNo

I also like the latest release from Valerie June called "The Order of Time.” Here’s a link to “Long Lonely Road” which you can hear on 91.1 now, https://youtu.be/ntc8jL9VDmQ

I think Sarah Jaroz's "Undercurrent" is cool, as it the new album from Cory and Adriel.

These are not releases that you will grow out of or away from. I look for potentially timeless stuff, as opposed to “flavor-of-the-week” stuff.

Fleet Foxes new album "Crack Up" has some remarkable spots as well. As for other things, I like the "Moonlight" soundtrack when you are looking for that kind of ambiance that only soundtracks can give you. As for classic stuff, Billie Holiday "Lady in Autumn" is always at the ready – arguably definitive collection from her years on the Verve label.

Sara Vos

A couple tunes I've been way into over the last week or so, first Bob Dylan's "Love Minus Zero." It's awesome that there's so much Dylan to discover. We were playing in Chicago last weekend and a man at one of our shows adamantly encouraged me to listen to this song and to read the lyrics – specifically:

"My love, she speaks like silence. Without ideas or violence. She doesn't have to say she's faithful. Yet she's true like ice, like fire.”

Listen to it here: https://youtu.be/lCdF3KuRimg

Next is "Solar Pilgrim" by Twain. I just stumbled across the song – it's absolutely stunning – I can't stop listening to it. It's both delicate and passionate – a narrative. I love the guitar style and tone, and the vocals and lyrics are truly haunting. Check it out: https://youtu.be/VBQpqjqoF_M

Over the summer I'd say I had a couple of favorite new releases, one being Grizzly Bear's "Painted Ruins." They had been on hiatus for a while I believe, and their new record is incredible. It's worth at least a dozen listens.

Perhaps my favorite release this summer was Fleet Foxes new record, "Crack-Up." I would encourage anyone to put some headphones on and listen to the aesthetic of these songs. It required a little more patience for me than their previous records but I also found it to be more mature and a little darker.

One more if I can – Paul Simon's "Rhythm of the Saints" record. Holy smokes! The song "Can't Run But."
